PETALING JAYA: Taman Abaka in Ladang Table, Tawau, Sabah, will be placed in lockdown under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from May 25 to June 7 after a spike in Covid-19 cases in the area.

In a statement, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 37 of the 135 Covid-19 tests done in the area returned positive.

“The EMCO will enable the health ministry to conduct early detection of Covid-19 cases so that they can be isolated as soon as possible and ensure the infections do not spread to outside the community,” he said.

Ismail also announced that the EMCO at Kampung Keramat in Semporna, Sabah, will end tomorrow as scheduled.

Meanwhile, he said police arrested 644 people yesterday over MCO-related offences

Of that number, 614 were slapped with compound fines and 30 remanded.

Among the offences were failing to provide details for contact tracing or registration (281), failure to wear a face mask (126), failing to maintain physical distancing (103) and others (90).

Ismail also said police arrested 39 illegal immigrants and seized three vehicles under the ongoing Op Benteng. - FMT
