Flood hits low lying Beaufort and Tenom districts

 

KOTA KINABALU: Disaster management teams in south western Beaufort and the interior of Tenom are on high alert amid heavy rains over the past few days.

Some 55 people from 15 families have been evacuated as flood hit some 57 low lying kampungs in Tenom and Beaufort overnight.

A spokesman for the Civil Defence Force said in a statement that seven families comprising of 29 people in Tenom were shifted to the Kalang Kanar Cultural Hall, while eight families in Beaufort were shifted to the Mohd Dun Banir Community Centre.

The spokesman said that river was swelling due to the rain, and did not rule out the possibility that other districts in the interior and south western areas of the state will experience flooding.

Floods also hit six schools in Beaufort - SK Bangkalalak, SK Jabang, Sekolah Agama Negeri Limbawang, SK Lago, SK Suasa, and Sekolah Menengah St Paul, as well as SK Kalang Kanar and SK Enubai in Tenom.

However, it did not affect classes as the schools were closed.

As of 8am Monday, several roads were made impassable for all vehicles except for heavy vehicles, the statement said.

The roads include Jalan Kampung Binunuk, Jalan Kampung Balibata, Jalan Simpang 4 Chan Furniture, and Jalan Kampung Kangsa, Jalan Kampung Suasa, Jalan Kampung Bangkalalak, Jalan Mahkamah, Jalan Kampung Luagan Sanginan, Jalan Kampung Berumbai, Jalan Kalang Kanar, Jalan RTM Tenom, Jalan Bunut, Jalan Pansailon Tanjung, and Jalan Tumantalik. - Star
