PETALING JAYA: Former Penang Umno Youth head Mohamed Ismail Othman succumbed to Covid-19 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Ismail, 60, who was also a long-serving councillor on the Penang Island City Council, is believed to have tested positive while in the capital, and died at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
His passing was posted on Instagram by his daughter-in-law Marsha Milan Londoh, who is a popular actress. She asked that people pray for his soul.
Ismail, a former political secretary to Umno strongman and Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz, was an influential figure in the Jelutong Umno division during the days when Barisan Nasional was in power in Penang.
Known as “Ali Gemuk”, Ismail was among key local party leaders when Anwar Ibrahim was chairman of the state Umno and national deputy president in the 1990s.
Yesterday, Umno’s permanent deputy chairman Rizuan Abdul Hamid also died of the virus at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) here.- FMT
