PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian arm of a Palestinian-led movement that promotes boycotts against Israeli interests, has suggested for RTM news to describe Hamas as “freedom fighters”.
“Armed resistance against foreign aggression is, after all, permitted under international law,” Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia said in a statement.
The group said there was a whole glossary of terms used by “Zionist propaganda and their ilk” when reporting on the issue.
“Such terms had prolonged the agony suffered by the Palestinian people.
“The Malaysian media must be ever vigilant not to fall prey to Zionist propaganda, lest it become an accomplice in the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
Earlier today, communications and multimedia minister Saifuddin Abdullah said that two RTM news editors were issued show-cause letters after the broadcaster’s Mandarin news segment had referred to the Hamas group as “militant” when reporting on the latest flare-up in the Gaza strip.
Saifuddin added that he ordered for an immediate investigation into the matter, with a relook into the SOPs of the RTM newsroom so that such an error does not happen again.
“RTM is aware of the current situation and is firmly behind the sovereignty and freedom of Palestine, as per the stand taken by Malaysians,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Saifuddin said an open apology over the matter was read twice during the 1pm and 7pm bulletins yesterday.
BDS Malaysia went on to applaud the prompt action taken by Saifuddin.
“The minister deserves the praises and plaudits of all who want to see honest and accurate reporting, especially of the events now unfolding in Palestine.” - FMT
