Harapan demands clarity on schooling in MCO areas

Pakatan Harapan education committee has demanded that the Education Ministry provide clarity on the status of schools in areas which will come under movement control order (MCO) restrictions tomorrow.

"Will schools be closed or will they remain open until the Hari Raya (on May 13)? An immediate announcement is necessary because some schools are having their mid-terms.

"An early announcement will allow the school management to arrange examination schedules and help students maintain focus," said the committee.

It added that an early announcement will also help parents to plan, especially in finding caretakers.

Schools will break for a week, either beginning May 7 or May 8, to mark Hari Raya.

On April 26, the Education Ministry announced that after the Hari Raya break, schools will have to conduct two weeks of home-based learning throughout the country, before term break begins either on May 28 or May 29.

The committee said the Education Ministry should also bring clarity to the status of students in boarding schools, especially on whether they are allowed to return home, which might entail the crossing of state and district borders.

"If the government allows parents to bring their child home, the Harapan education committee recommends (a policy) where a letter from the school would suffice for border crossings," it added.

This was to avoid the parents having to queue for a police permit, the committee said.

The statement was signed by Maszlee Malik, the Simpang Renggam MP and Harapan education committee head, alongside three other lawmakers - Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PKR-Setiawangsa), Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) and Hasan Baharom (Amanah-Tampin).

Six districts in Selangor will undergo MCO beginning midnight tonight until May 17.
