Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching has urged the government to set up more AstraZeneca vaccination centres in Muar, northern Johor, along with an additional centre in Penang.
She said the government should also consider opening a centre in Kelantan to boost the state's vaccination rate of 5.88 percent as of May 22, according to government data.
This came after the second AstraZeneca opt-in vaccination exercise which opened this afternoon, which has been expanded to applicants in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Sarawak - areas with a high number of Covid-19 cases.
"Expanding the vaccination to Sarawak, Penang, and Johor is certainly a commendable move.
"Between May 9 and 22, we (Johor) recorded 66,353 new Covid-19 cases. Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya recorded 23,170, 6,590, and 203 cases respectively, or 45.2 percent of total cases.
"Sarawak recorded the second-highest after Klang Valley, ie 6,799 cases or 10.25 percent while Johor recorded the 3rd highest, ie 5,765 cases or 8.7 percent of total cases," Teo said in a statement today.
"However, unlike Sarawak, we only have one vaccination centre in Johor, which is the Persada Johor International Convention Centre," she added.
At present, the fastest route from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's constituency in Pagoh to Johor Baru would require a vaccine recipient to travel for around one hour and 35 minutes, compared to only 30 minutes to Muar.
"In view of the movement control order (MCO), the Perikatan Nasional government should consider setting up another vaccination centre in northern Johor, to reduce travelling time and cost," she said.
In Sarawak, those who opted for the AstraZeneca vaccine have the option of selecting a centre in Kuching or Miri town, a significant distance for those living in the interior. - Mkini
