PETALING JAYA: LRT staff on duty during the crash that occurred last night have been taken off duty, transport minister Wee Ka Siong said today.

Speaking to reporters after visiting some of the crash victims warded at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, he said that this was part of the SOP of the ministry.

“We have an SOP that doesn’t allow those under investigation to continue working,” he said.

“All trains on the LRT are run electronically, but in this case there was manual intervention by the driver operating the train.”

Earlier today, he said the crash was a result of a technical error that forced the train without passengers to be driven manually.

“Initial findings show that the accident was caused by the negligence of the hostler (train driver) who was driving TR40 in the wrong direction,” he said.

In addition to an investigation into the crash helmed by a special task force, police have also opened their own probe into the matter.

Dang Wangi district police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah told Bernama today that they would be calling in the 32-year-old driver involved in the incident.

He said police would also be assisting the ministry in their investigation.

Hospital Kuala Lumpur director Dr Herric Corray also gave an update today on the seriously injured victims.

He said that there are currently three people who are warded in the intensive care unit. They are in stable but semi-critical condition.

Their injuries include brain haemorrhaging, internal bleeding, fractured bones and injuries to the liver.- FMT
