Opposition push for contract details after govt opts for private sector over 'free option'

The opposition renewed its call for the government to disclose details of its directly negotiated contract with Media Prima Berhad on converting NTV7 into Didik TV as part of the Education Ministry's efforts to facilitate home-based learning.

The Pakatan Harapan education committee noted that this was despite the government having its own TV channels which can be used for free.

"Is it true that the contract is worth RM70 million for 2021?"

It also asked the government to clarify the status of the contract and whether it had been inked.

The statement was jointly signed by representatives from seven parties, namely Nik NAzmi Nik Ahmad (PKR), Teo Nie Ching (DAP), Hasan Baharom (Amanah), Madius Tangau (Upko), Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman (Muda), Amiruddin Hamzah (Pejuang) and Ahmad Hassan (Warisan).

The committee is led by former education minister Maszlee Malik, who is also an independent MP.

They also questioned what will happen to the material aired on DidikTV.

In particular, they noted that the education materials, after being aired on DidikTV, is also made available on Media Prima's Tonton online platform.

However, they said a substantial part of the material was provided by the Education Ministry and also teachers.

As such, they questioned why the material was not instead made available on the Education Ministry's online platforms such as Delima and EduwebTV.

"Aren't the home-based learning material aired on DidikTV prepared by teachers paid by the Education Ministry?

"Why are the materials on Tonton but not on Delima and Eduweb TV portals?" they said.

They urged the government to clarify the matter, noting that they are unable to direct these questions in Parliament as it had been suspended under the emergency. - Mkini
