BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man escaped with minor injuries when a tree fell on his car along Jalan Utama in Kampung Pelet here this afternoon.

Although the driver was pinned to his seat, firefighters managed to pull him out to safety.

The Penanti Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the incident at 4.49pm.

Operations officer Kamaruzi Mohd Nor said, when they arrived at the scene, they found a tree lying across the road and a crushed Proton Saga.

"A man was pinned to the driver's seat. However, we managed to pull him to safety. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries," he said when contacted.

Kamaruzi said they then cleaned up the mess together with workers from the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP).

The incident came about a week after a similar incident. On April 27, a man was killed when a century-old huge Angsana tree uprooted and crashed on his car following continuous downpour.

The deceased, Yong Geeng Huei, 53, was on his way to work at a car repair workshop when the incident occurred along Jalan Perak.

Several businesses nearby had claimed that the Angsana tree was not there previously, and had only been replanted at the current site in 2018. - NST
