PKR, DAP demand MACC take Hamid's 'corrupt frogs' allegation seriously

PKR and DAP have urged the MACC to investigate newly retired inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador’s claim that there were elements of corruption in the defection of lawmakers.

Speaking to reporters in Petaling Jaya today, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said if the MACC continues to remain silent on Hamid’s allegations, then its reputation will be in tatters.

“(Hamid’s claim) supports what we have said before. The ball is in MACC’s court. The whistleblower is not a nobody. He’s the (former) police chief.

“If the MACC keeps quiet, it will be a disaster for the country,” said Saifuddin.

In a separate statement, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the MACC must explain its alleged failure to stem the “devastating” corruption described by Hamid.

“These revelations by the (former) IGP confirmed the use of corrupt practices to induce and threaten to buy political support from opposition-elected representatives to prop up the Perikatan Nasional government that has lost its majority.

“If the MACC fails to act even though the complaints of corruption originated from the (former) IGP himself, what hope is there for the ordinary public that MACC will act on their complaints of political corruption at the highest levels?” asked Lim.

In particular, Lim demanded that the MACC investigate the “scheme of things” speech, allegedly involving Bersatu’s plan to induce Umno lawmakers through government or GLC positions.

Both PKR and DAP have been hit by a string of defections following the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government in late February last year.

In his final press conference as IGP last Friday, Hamid made damning allegations against Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin for interfering with police affairs.

Hamid also alleged that there were “political frogs” - a reference to lawmakers who switch parties - that were very corrupt.

Incidentally, Hamzah was elected as a Umno lawmaker before joining Bersatu in February 2019, when the latter was still part of the Harapan coalition. - Mkini
