PETALING JAYA: A ‘Dato’ Seri’ believed to be the mastermind of an illegal gambling syndicate has been arrested in an operation that saw police seize items worth more than RM2 million.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Azmi Abu Kassim said the 55-year-old was running a few slot machines in a few premises around Kuala Lumpur since January.
Police who raided his house confiscated cash worth RM579,001, three watches worth RM238,000, seven gold bars and one locket worth RM58,250 and three vehicles worth RM1.215 million.
His arrest follows an initial raid at one of the premises located around Jalan Pudu, where police arrested six Bangladesh and Myanmar nationals.
Three operators – one Malaysian and two foreigners – were also arrested. Over RM10,000 in cash was seized from them, along with equipment and slot machines.
A series of further police operations took place, with a total of 18 suspects arrested. They were aged between 17 and 71.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) and Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section (6)(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Azmi said investigation papers have been referred to the deputy public prosecutor, and 13 suspects will be charged under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Four others will be charged under the Prevention of Crimes Act (POCA) 1959 – out of the four, two of them will also be charged under the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) 2001.
Meanwhile, on the alleged rape of a woman by two friends of Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham, he said investigations were ongoing.
“We are in the process of completing our investigations and hope to refer to the deputy public prosecutor by the end of this week or next week for further instructions,” he said.
On May 9, Azmi said the case was being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
One of the persons implicated in the police report is a division leader of a component party of Perikatan Nasional, while the other is said to be an acquaintance of Hilman’s.
The police report was revealed by former Umno supreme council member Lokman Adam. - FMT
