Record statements online to avoid Dang Wangi cluster, cops told

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan has urged the police to record witness statements online instead of summoning them for questioning at a police station.

Since certain court cases are being conducted online, he reasoned that there is no excuse a witness statement can’t be recorded online as well since such statements usually cannot be used in court anyway.

“That would save our time, media’s time, lawyer’s time, and ensure social distancing is not compromised. This would also avoid the public gathering of anxious supporters and those who want to show solidarity.

“I am sure most in the police force would appreciate this as their main task is fighting crime and going after activists.

“I hope the new inspector-general of police will consider this suggestion in line with the increased cases of Covid-19. Let's avoid a Dang Wangi cluster,” he said in a statement last night.

Arutchelvan (above) said he had already been summoned by the police for questioning twice in the preceding two days.

One was for investigations into a solidarity gathering for artist-activist Fahmi Reza held outside the Dang Wang police district headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on April 24.

Aside from Arutchelvan, seven others were also summoned for the gathering.

The second time he was called in by police was for a gathering on May 1 in conjunction with May Day.

Yesterday, Covid-19 cases in the country exceeded 3,000 cases for the fifth time in a week.

ICU utilisation was also at an all-time high as even relatively young people were turning up at the hospital with severe symptoms, and treatments that previously worked were no longer as effective as before. - Mkini
