KOTA BARU: The state health department has been forced to utilise the services of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) to control 'walk-in' individuals seeking inoculation at Vaccine Delivery Centres (PPV).

Kelantan Health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said `walk-in' individuals have been descending at PPV statewide with aim of taking the place of vaccine recipients who failed to turn-up for their Covid-19 vaccine jabs.

"The a recent incident at our PPV in Dewan Sri Guchil, Kuala Krai, many people rushed to the centre to get the vaccine, causing the place to become crowded.

"This incident went viral and therefore, the department has to use Rela members to control the crowd.

"As the second phase of the National Immunisation Programme (NIP) for elderly people and the high-risk group is still ongoing and a possibility of similar incident recurring, we have asked Rela members to be stationed and monitor the situation at our PPVs," he said.

Dr Zaini said this after visiting the latest Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) at Gelanggang Seni which is scheduled to open next week.

On a related matter, he said the department was concerned with the increase of the South African Covid-19 variant.

As of Tuesday, he said a total of 17 cases were recorded in Kelantan and a majority of the cases were detected in Tumpat and Tanah Merah.

"We also have taken samples from several clusters which are active in the state, including the community clusters," he added. - NST
