Sarawak assembly set to expire, Agong advises executive to stay on

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has advised the Sarawak cabinet to continue on despite the expiry of the state assembly on June 6.

A statement by the Sarawak chief minister’s office said Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg was granted an audience with the Agong today, where the ruler was informed of the expiry of the state assembly.

Abang Johari had previously left the decision to dissolve the legislative assembly to the wisdom of the king and the state governor Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had advised that in view of the worrying Covid-19 situation, the state government is to conduct business as usual under the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021,” said the chief minister’s office.

The proclamation of emergency had suspended all legislatures and elections.

Sarawak is currently among the worst hit states in the recent resurgence in Covid-19 cases in the country.

According to Article 21(3) of the Sarawak constitution, the Dewan Undangan Negeri “shall, unless sooner dissolved, continue for five years from the date of its first sitting and shall then stand dissolved”.

The chief minister’s office said Abang Johari had previously sought the advice of the attorney-general, Election Commission, Health Ministry, the police and the military.

The Agong had granted an audience through video conferencing. Leaders of Abang Johari’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition were also present. - Mkini
