SSR calls for Aidilfitri social media protest against PN, MCO

Citing the latest announcement of a nationwide movement control order (MCO) as a failure of the Perikatan Nasional government of Muhyiddin Yassin, a group has called for a social media protest on this Thursday on Aidilfitri.

Organised by Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR), an ad hoc coalition of youth groups that include Undi18 and the “Buka Puasa Buka Parlimen” grouping, the protest is intended to call out the failures of the PN government in coping with the Covid-19 pandemic.

"SSR calls on Malaysians to write #BerayaDiJalanraya or #EnamTuntutan on a placard and invite family members or close friends for a photo session outside your home and making sure you follow the SOPs and practise the one-metre social distancing. Then upload the picture on your social media and share it using the hashtag," SSR said in a statement today.

It said that the implementation of the MCO 3.0 was proof that the PN government had failed to control Covid-19 despite taking the drastic steps of calling for an emergency.

"This is the second year that Malaysians are not allowed to return to their villages to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri together with parents and loved ones.

"The government announcement of a nationwide MCO for the third time from May 12 to June 7 will be painful for all Malaysians, and is also strange because Senior Minister of Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said just days before (on May 8) that the government would not carry out such a move.

"We would like to emphasise that the emergency that has been imposed to control the Covid-19 situation has failed to yield any results and the number of cases of infection has not decreased since January 2021 but keeps rising and rising," said SSR.

It said it was clear that the government's decision to implement an emergency was a major failure.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announcing the state of emergency.

"The continued inefficiency and negligence of the government in handling the Covid-19 pandemic and constantly changing decisions after making an announcement without being guided by science and data have resulted in constant confusion for all Malaysians and also for the economic sector.

"Those most affected as a result of this negligence are the common people," it added.

SSP said that while when ordinary people were not allowed to return home to be with their parents, ministers and VVIPs were constantly seen violating SOP protocols.

"Bazaars, small hawkers, night markets as well as small and medium enterprises are certainly affected by the uncertainty of the implementation of MCO, with unclear instructions and procedures for the opening and operation of small businesses adding to the losses that traders have to face.

"In fact, many have gone bankrupt for not getting proper assistance from the government," it claimed.

The SSR called on the government to resume the automatic loan moratorium, exempt business owners from rental payments and compensate the bazaar traders.

"The SSR stands by the common people and is ready to mobilise the energy of young people across the country to fight for the destiny and rights of all the people," it said. - Mkini
