PETALING JAYA: The transport ministry has played down reports that businessman Desmond Lim was planning to take over the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport, saying it is merely a proposal.

In a statement, the ministry said it is common practice for the market to submit proposals to the government through the ministry to develop new or existing assets.

In the case of the airport, commonly known as the Subang Airport, “great care and deliberation” is needed for its long-term future in the broader Malaysian aviation landscape in view of it being a significant facility, it said.

The airport is also a major urban hub for Klang Valley residents.

“Any proposal to redevelop Subang Airport is still preliminary and any final considerations and decision rest with the Cabinet,” the ministry added.

Yesterday, The Vibes reported that Lim, the largest shareholder of construction and property development company WCT Holdings, wanted to acquire and operate Subang Airport until 2092.

It was reported that Lim would do so through his subsidiary, Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd.

The proposal was presented to the transport ministry with an estimated RM3.7 billion of initial investment.

Of the sum, RM1.7 billion would be for the passenger terminal and executive jet terminal set to open in 2027, and the rest would be used over the next decade on the airport city. - FMT
