UMS’ Abdullah Gani on cloud nine with ‘top researcher’ award

Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Abdullah Gani is among the ‘Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers 2020’ named by insights and analysis firm Clarivate.

KOTA KINABALU: Producing quality scientific papers is a top priority for Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Abdullah Gani, who has been recognised as one of the “Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers 2020”.

The 64-year-old dean of UMS’ Faculty of Computer and Informatics said the ability to separate emotion from professionalism to achieve the right mindset had been a key ingredient of his success.

“Throughout my involvement in research activities, recognition was never my concern,” he told FMT.

He was earlier named one of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists of the Year 2020” by Stanford University and listed as the top computer scientist in the country by “Guide2Research”.

His billing as a “Top 1% Highly Cited Researcher 2020” came from Clarivate, a leading insights and analysis firm recognised globally.

Abdullah said the research that led to the achievement revolved around the “internet of things” and “cloud computing”, with specialisation in “mobile cloud computing”.

“‘Mobile cloud computing’ is a combination of cloud computing with mobile devices. The crux of my research is about how cloud computing can be utilised by mobile devices such as smartphones, which have relatively limited processing and storage capabilities,” he said, adding that “asynchronous offloading” could be the answer.

“When I heard about the recognition, I was grateful and happy. It is more meaningful because it places the country and UMS on the world stage,” he said.

UMS vice-chancellor Taufiq Yap said the recognition received by Abdullah is an achievement to be proud of and serves to show that the university has world-class lecturers and researchers.

“I congratulate Abdullah on this achievement. It will definitely be a boost for other staff to continue to do better in their respective fields,” he said. - FMT
