KUALA LUMPUR: Ismail Sabri Yaakob this evening raised the spectre of Covid-19 cases reaching 5,000 new infections daily after the Hari Raya festivities if the public failed to adhere to the SOPs.

The senior minister for security said the possibility was raised during a meeting with the health ministry.

“And if we fail to curb this spike, then the number of daily cases could even increase to 10,000. That could put us in the same position as India is in now.

“We don’t want to see people dying on the streets like what is happening in India,” he told reporters here.

Earlier today, it was reported that daily infections in India rose by 382,315. It also recorded 3,780 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Ismail went on to say that the government was not out to inconvenience the people by enforcing the movement control order (MCO) in several states and localities following the recent surge in Covid-19 cases.

“The government has no choice but to do so as it cares for the people and wants to avoid a similar tragedy to that which has crippled India.

“I hope the people understand. I know they are angry, but we want to save lives.

“India became very relaxed after their leaders declared victory over the pandemic and now they can’t control it. We don’t want that to happen to our country.”

This evening, the government said that Kuala Lumpur will come under an MCO from Friday until May 20, joining six Selangor districts.

The six Selangor districts are Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang.

Johor Bahru, Kulai and Kota Tinggi in Johor will also be under MCO for the same period, as well as 14 sub-districts in Terengganu, and Taiping in Perak. - FMT
