13k persons with disabilities to get drive-through vaccination - Khairy

A total of 13,500 persons with disabilities in the Klang Valley will receive Covid-19 vaccines at the country's first drive-through vaccination centre from tomorrow, said Khairy Jamaluddin.

Khairy, who is the coordinating minister for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP), said the centre is located at Menara Sime Darby Plantation, Ara Damansara, Selangor and targets to administer 200 vaccine doses daily.

“This is the first drive-through vaccination centre for the disabled in the country and even the world. I am confident that this pilot project will be successful and we will increase the number of recipients and the rate for the daily doses in the future," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after inspecting preparations at the vaccination centre today.

Khairy said the drive-through centre could set an early example before the government issues guidelines for other states to set up their own drive-through vaccination centres which are specially designed for persons with disabilities to get jabbed without leaving their vehicles.

The minister said this centre was the brainchild of Senator Ras Adiba Radzi who is president of the non-governmental organisation OKU Sentral, and is in collaboration with the Ara Damansara Medical Centre, Sime Darby Plantation Bhd, and other government agencies.

Meanwhile, Ras Adiba said OKU Sentral received nearly 16,000 applications from the disabled but had to shortlist 13,500 recipients.

She added that the drive-through vaccination centre was set up for the convenience of persons with disabilities from all categories.

She hoped the government would provide more vaccine doses and set up more of such centres nationwide.

The drive-through vaccination centre, which will operate from 9am to 5pm, allows disabled people, accompanied by a caregiver, to get the vaccine without having to leave their vehicles. - Mkini
