BUTTERWORTH: The 11 men who were arrested yesterday for violating movement control order SOPs while taking part in a funeral procession in Butterworth, Penang, were today remanded for four days.
The men, aged 15 to 35, were identified from a video of the procession which had gone viral on social media.
The video showed a few of the men carrying a coffin accompanied by a percussion band and a few others carrying a banner with a photo of the deceased and what appeared to resemble a gang sign.
Assistant registrar Nigel Jirin allowed the remand application by the police to investigate the men for being part of an unlawful society, internet abuse, being negligent in likely spreading a disease dangerous to life and being part of a gathering deemed illegal under the MCO.
The offences are being investigated under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 269 of the Penal Code, including the present MCO rules.
Yesterday, Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said an undertaker questioned by cops said he had advised the group not to remove the deceased’s casket from the hearse, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
The deceased, a 23-year-old man, had died due to tuberculosis on June 16. The funeral and procession to a Hindu crematorium on Jalan Siram were held the next day.
Police are on the lookout for others who took part in the procession, which was believed to have involved about 15-20 people.
The TikTok video which was uploaded by one of the men yesterday has since been removed. - FMT
