500 from Jeli Orang Asli community get Covid-19 vaccination

The Orang Asli community from Sungai Rual, Jeli, Kelantan, welcomes the Covid-19 Vaccination Outreach Programme which has seen more than 500 individuals inoculated so far.

Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed who said this, added the session today saw 235 Orang Asli receiving their first dose of the vaccine while an earlier group was inoculated on June 5.

He said the local Orang Asli community has given their full cooperation towards the government's National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP) as part of efforts to curb new infections.

"The vaccination programme today saw more people coming forward compared to the first phase as their confidence was boosted by those who had been vaccinated.

"We are also making efforts to organise four more outreach programmes in Air Lanas, Batu Melintang, the Jeli in-community recovery centre and the Jeli parliamentary office," said Mustapa, who is also Air Lanas assemblyperson, when met in Sungai Rual today.

Additionally, he said the outreach programme has also identified two more Orang Asli villages with assistance from state government agencies.

With the planned increase in outreach programmes, the minister in the Prime Minister's Department expressed hope that the government could allocate enough vaccines for those who have registered so far.

'Tok Batin helps to promote vaccine'

Sungai Rual village chief Bidin Daud, 63, said he was happy to see more Orang Asli accepting the vaccines and protecting themselves against Covid-19 infection.

"I am among the earlier group to be vaccinated and therefore as the village chief here, I took the initiative to share the benefits of the vaccine from house to house so they will be more open to it.

"More people are starting to welcome and view the vaccine from the positive perspective of preventing the spread of the pandemic," he said.

Malaysiakini previously reported that 127,669 Orang Asli nationwide were identified under NIP to be vaccinated. - Mkini
