A man pleaded guilty at the Kota Bharu Session Court today for extorting an elderly woman and intentionally putting her in fear last April.

The accused, Muhamad Fikrianisfatullah Mohd Azmi (above), 27, admitted to the charges after they were read out before judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin.

He was charged with committing a crime against the 63-year-old woman by threatening to injure her if she did not immediately hand over her cash amounting to RM2.

The incident happened in a residence at Kampung Kubang Siput, Pasir Tumboh, at about 4.35pm, on April 5.

The accused was charged under Section 390 of the Penal Code for robbery. If found guilty,  he faces punishment of up to 14 years imprisonment and shall also be liable to a fine or whipping under Section 392.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Wan Nurul Hanini Wan Ahmad Shukry.

The court has set July 6 for sentencing.

Meanwhile, in a separate proceeding at the Kota Bharu Magistrate's Court, Fikrianisfatullah pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft involving a Honda EX5 motorcycle in front of a residence at Kampung Pulau Gadong, Jalan Kuala Besar, at 3pm on April 17.

The plea was made before magistrate Kamarul Hasyime Rosli.

Section 379A of the Penal Code carries imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, and a fine if convicted.

DPP Siti Edabayu Subhan prosecuted and the accused was represented by lawyer Ariyani Mohd Amin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Ariyani requested the court to set the bail at RM2,000 as the accused was a construction worker earning RM50 a day.

The court granted bail of RM4,000 with one surety and set the case for mention on July 11. - Mkini
