Covid-19 (June 24) - 5,841 new cases, 84 deaths, 30 new clusters

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 5,841 new Covid-19 cases and 84 deaths.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose to 61,162 breaking an 18-day continuous drop.

The number of patients requiring intensive care has dropped slightly as has the number of patients requiring a ventilator.

  • Active cases: 61,162
  • Patients in ICU: 869
  • Intubated: 438

Breakdown by states

  • Selangor (2,072)
  • Negeri Sembilan (781)
  • Sarawak (581)
  • Kuala Lumpur (552)
  • Johor (346)
  • Kedah (271)
  • Malacca (247)
  • Labuan (212)
  • Sabah (203)
  • Pahang (162)
  • Kelantan (135)
  • Perak (120)
  • Penang (108)
  • Terengganu (29)
  • Putrajaya (17)
  • Perlis (5)

Although most new Covid-19 cases are concentrated in the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan and Sarawak, regions such as Pahang appear to have a growing number of cases.

Pahang (162) reported cases in the three digits for the third straight day after nine days of reporting numbers in the two digits.

Terengganu (29) and Penang (108) appear to be the only states where things are relatively under control based on the past week's data.

In Selangor, an alarming one in 5.6 new Covid-19 cases was only detected after a person reported Covid-19 symptoms but not linked to existing clusters or close contacts.

As of yesterday, the R-naught figure for the country had inched up to 0.97. As long as the R-naught remains below 1.00, it is an indication that the spread of Covid-19 is slowing down.

The only region where the R-naught was more than 1.05 was Negeri Sembilan (1.03). The regions with the lowest R-naught figures are Terengganu (0.69), Putrajaya (0.78) and Pahang (0.84).

Deaths

The Health Ministry today reported another 84 deaths attributed to Covid-19. The national death toll has reached 4,721.

There have been 1,925 people who have died of Covid-19 in the month of June alone, or 40 percent of all Covid-19 deaths reported so far.

On average, 80 people die from Covid-19 daily or around 3.3 deaths per hour.

There were 12 victims today who were aged 40 and below. One victim was only eight years old. Eleven victims were already dead when they were brought to the hospital.

Selangor (32) reported the most deaths followed by Kuala Lumpur (10), Negeri Sembilan (10), Kelantan (8), Johor (7), Kedah (6), Labuan (3), Perak (2), Pahang (2), Malacca (2), Sabah (1) and Terengganu (1).

Details of the victims are documented on Malaysiakini's Covid-19 tracker page.
