Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will only compel liquor shops to close during the 14-day "total lockdown" period which began on June 1, but other retailers are free to sell liquor or alcoholic beverages.
In a statement today, DBKL clarified that the sale of alcohol is still allowed for convenience stores and supermarkets.
There has been confusion in Kuala Lumpur in recent days after several supermarkets were told to stop selling liquor or alcoholic beverages.
Earlier today, MCA secretary-general Choong Sin Woon criticised the authorities for doing so, describing it as an over-extension of the National Security Council (NSC) orders.
Choong said alcoholic drinks should be treated the same way as soft drinks, according to NSC rules.
However, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Rosol Wahid defended the liquor shop ban.
He said cigarettes, which were also not essential goods, could still be sold to avoid problems arising from "addicts". - Mkini
