Family of 19 slapped with RM2,000 fines for holding wedding ceremony

Police were shocked to find a wedding being held in Butterworth despite the ban on such events during the MCO.

BUTTERWORTH: Nineteen family members and a photographer were each slapped with a fine of RM2,000 for holding a wedding ceremony during the movement control order (MCO) period.

Seberang Prai police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said policemen on patrol to monitor compliance to SOPs yesterday discovered a wedding was being held in a housing area here.

Weddings are prohibited during the MCO.

“We immediately took action to issue compound notices to the 19 family members and a photographer present at the wedding,” he said.

Noorzainy said he was baffled by the attitude of certain people who refused to observe the SOPs meant to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“We will not compromise with anyone who does not want to adhere to these SOPs,” he said.

Besides the 20 participants of the wedding, Noorzainy said compound notices were also issued against 21 others who breached the SOPs in the district yesterday.

He said some of them were fined for interstate and inter-district travel. - FMT
