Govt expands food basket aid, RM300k for all MPs including opposition

The existing food basket programme has been expanded to include all opposition parliamentarians with an additional RM300,000 allocation for needy recipients in their constituency, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

The additional allocation for essential food aid was announced as part of the RM150 billion National People's Well-Being and Economic Recovery Package (Pemulih) aid package, including direct fiscal injection of RM10 billion.

"Be it government or opposition MPs, everyone must shoulder the responsibility to help the people at a time when many are in need.

"Use this allocation wisely to help needy people in every constituency," Muhyiddin said in a live televised address.

He also announced an additional RM10 million for a special food basket programme for the Orang Asli community.

Muhyiddin also announced that the government will implement a price control programme for cooking oil based on the threshold price for crude palm oil.

He said it was a part of the government's initial plans to tackle the increase in the price of bottled cooking oil between 1kg and 5kg.

"The government is committed to helping the public lower their cost of living.

"We will continue with the price control policy for essential goods despite the increase in global commodity prices," he said.

"Through this programme, for example, the price for a 5kg bottle of cooking oil can be controlled to not exceed RM30," he said.

At present only cooking oil sold in 1kg packets is listed as a controlled item at a price not exceeding RM2.50. - Mkini
