Pakatan Harapan has called for bipartisan action over a diplomatic incident involving China military aircraft which flew into the Kota Kinabalu Flight Information Region (FIR) but did not respond to traffic controllers.
In a joint statement, the opposition coalition's presidential council said Malaysia deserved a reasonable explanation.
The Chinese embassy in Malaysia had said it acted in accordance with international law and that its 16 aircraft was conducting a "routine exercise".
The presidential council said failure to respond to traffic controllers could cause danger to the airspace and was "not in good faith".
"When foreign aircraft are detected flying in an in-trail tactical formation 60 nautical miles from Malaysia's maritime zone, the action is suspicious and is not in line with the rules-based international order.
"Harapan views the incident seriously and stressed that Malaysia has a right to get a reasonable explanation," said the Harapan presidential council.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
They said bipartisanship was needed on issues involving national sovereignty.
"The incident also raises pertinent questions including the action plan to manage intrusions and the modernisation of the Malaysian Armed Forces' capabilities under the Defence White Paper 2019," they said.
They also urged the government to hold a bipartisan briefing on the incident. - Mkini
