KUALA LUMPUR: High jumper Lee Hup Wei won a gold medal at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Sunday but hit a double whammy.
He picked up an ankle injury during the event and will be out for two weeks, and he will not be taking his coach to the Tokyo Olympics next month.
Team manager Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh confirmed it.
"Hup Wei picked up an ankle injury during the gold medal jump. He may need two weeks to recover," said Wan Hisham.
Hup Wei achieved 2.10m for the gold, which was below than the Olympic qualifying mark of 2.33m
However, Hup Wei will still be in Tokyo next month as one of the top-32 high jumpers in the world. He is currently ranked 19th.
The 34-year-old had wanted to take his Uzbek-born coach Alexander Gasparyan to the Olympics but the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) had challenged him to hit the 2.33m mark in Kazakhstan to realise his request.
But his effort on Saturday will now see Kedah AAA secretary K. Govindarajoo following him as manager.
Sprinter Jonathan Nyepa won his second silver when he clocked 21.76s in the men's 200m while compatriot Ilham Suhaimi took the bronze on 21.92s.
On Saturday, Jonathan had won silver in the 100m with a slow time of 10.64s.
The winner was Kazakhstan's Vitality Zems, who clocked 21.19s.
He also won the 100m race on Saturday.
The Tokyo Olympic qualifying time for the 200m is 20.24s, while Jonathan's personal best is 20.92s.
In the triple jump, Hakimi Ismail failed to be among the medalists when he only managed a 15.62m, which was below than his personal best of 16.77m as well as the 16.68m he did at 2019 Philippines Sea Games. - NST
