MENUMBOK: Several Sabah government-linked companies (GLCs) have came forward to provide financial assistance to speedboat operators plying the route between Menumbok and Labuan.

The assistance was part of the GLCs corporate social responsibility to help the operators whose daily source of income were badly affected by the Movement Control Order, said state Special Tasks Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Arif.

During the handing over ceremony yesterday, Sabah Baitulmal Corporation contributed RM13,000, Zakat and Fitras Division of the Sabah Islamic Religious Council RM5,000 apart from food baskets from Yayasan Dakwah Malaysia Sabah Branch (Yadim) as well as food vouchers from Sharom Abd Ghaffae of SR Events Production.

The Menumbok-Labuan Speedboat Operators Association chairman Mohamad Sait expressed appreciation to the government for helping its 130 members during these trying times as boat services were not allowed to operate.

Sait said the contributions would give them a temporary relief as the members relied on the boat operations to earn daily income.

He also hope the government would include them in the one-off financial assistance under the state government's third edition of Bantuan Sabah Prihatin (BSP) 3.0.

"We hope the government will take into consideration our situation because the number of Covid-19 cases in Labuan have yet to decline, thus affecting our boat services," he added. - NST
