KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state government has issued rules for the handling of funeral arrangements and wakes to pay last respects for non-Muslims.
State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the rule came after the Pulutan Nabawan cluster, triggered from the paying of last respects, caused a high number of infections at the locality.
He said this was the second incident after the Sinsingon Nabawan cluster that was reported on Feb 22.
The new SOP will last until June 14, he said, in his daily Covid-19 statement today.
Among the rules, he said, the wake or vigil to pay last respects to the deceased, either at private homes or funeral parlours, shall not exceed three days.
Visitors are only allowed to spend not more than five minutes to pay their last respects, with no more than three people, including the host, allowed in the holding room at any one time.
Prayers at private residences are limited to family members only and can be held not more than 10 days.
Masidi also said operating hours for businesses in Tawau have been shortened from 9am to 5pm daily after a surge in infections in the east coast district. The same will be done in the neighbouring Kalabakan district. - FMT
