A Malaysian pro-Palestinian hacker group has claimed to have stolen the personal information of hundreds of thousands of Israeli students and leaked them online, reported the Times of Israel.
The information includes names, phone numbers, e-mail and home addresses, according to a group calling itself DragonForce Malaysia.
The cyberattack was announced through a post on its website, in which the group called the operation “OpsBedil 2.0”.
They urged hackers, human rights organisations, and activists to campaign against “Israhell”, referring to Israel.
According to the report, the hackers made the move in response to Israel’s recent 11 days of fighting with groups, most notably Hamas, in the Gaza Strip.
The hackers behind the data breach allegedly drew the information from the website of AcadeMe, which is one of the largest recruitment networks in Israel for students and graduates seeking work.
AcadeMe works with top universities in the country such as Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Tel Aviv University, the Open University, Bar-Ilan University, the Technion, and the University of Haifa.
Student details were at first shared on Malaysian groups using the Telegram app.
The report said the details of some 280,000 students from 2014 to the present were leaked along with some 100,000 email addresses.
