Sabah allows e-hailing drivers to cross districts without permits

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has allowed e-hailing service providers to travel between districts without permits from the police.

State Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the exception to the current movement regulation will apply to Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and Penampang districts starting tomorrow.

"This permission is given to registered e-hailing drivers and taxis that follow the standard operating procedures as fixed by the National Security Council throughout the Movement Control Order 3.0.

"The allowed operation hours are from 6am until 8pm every day with a capacity of one passenger," he said in a statement, adding a maximum of two people are allowed for emergency cases.

On June 12, an e-hailing driver was fined RM5,000 by the police while sending a client to another district.

The incident was highlighted by Luyang assemblyman Ginger Phoong, from whom the driver sought help.

The man had picked up an essential worker from Penampang and wanted to head back to Kinarut in Papar.

Despite trying to explain to police at the roadblock at that time, he was still issued with a summons.

Today, Sabah recorded 193 Covid-19 cases with two deaths in Tawau and another one in Sandakan. - NST
