A Selangor PKR Youth delegate has mooted for the age limit of wing members to be raised from 35 to 40 years old.
Selangor PKR Youth communications director Mohd Khairool Ngadon (above) said the move was necessary as the party's youth members must be given more time and opportunities to uplift their positions.
"Selangor PKR Youth would like to propose for the age limit of our members to be raised to 40.
"Most PKR Youth leaders found it difficult to get a place to lead the party once they are past 35," said Khairool in debating a motion on youth economy at the PKR Youth virtual congress this morning.
"This move can also avoid a divide at the level of branch leaders," he said, adding that the youths' potential must be developed and embraced so that they can become respected leaders.
Khairool said while the issue of the youth economy is not new, their burden had worsened due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He urged the government to open up more opportunities for youths, including through training programmes and various financial assistance.
In 2009, PKR had amended its party constitution to lower the age limit of PKR Youth members from 40 to 35 years old, at the time it was mooted as a regeneration exercise and to open more room for youth leaders.
Within Pakatan Harapan, the DAP had in 2012, lowered its youth wing's age limit from 40 to 35, and there were past reported discussions to lower it further to 30 years old.
Amanah, meanwhile, remains at 40 years old.
In BN, Umno has a similar age limit of 40 for Youth members but there are no restrictions on the wing's leader.
