Shut it all down to save lives, says Tok Mat

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan says that almost all factories should be ordered closed, as they are the hotbeds of the Covid-19 clusters.

PETALING JAYA: A total lockdown is a must now after 115 Covid-19 clusters involving the workplace were detected within a two-week period in May, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad said the decision to allow the manufacturing sector to continue operating under the current movement restrictions, albeit shorter hours, will only increase the risk of the virus spreading.

This was especially so when taking into account that over half of the clusters detected between May 12 to May 26 were linked to factories.

There were a total of 5,392 Covid-19 cases reported in that 14-day period.

“This defeats the purpose of a total lockdown,” he said in a statement tonight.

He was responding to the international trade and industry ministry’s announcement that some 95,142 companies have been given the nod to operate during the movement control order.

Mohamad, often referred to as Tok Mat, expects the number of companies approved to operate to increase tomorrow.

He said the only sectors that should be allowed to operate are those involved with food, agriculture and health.

This, he said, was to help reduce the pressure on the healthcare system which is at a critical stage.

Mohamad went on to say that the manufacturing and construction sectors were not more important than other sectors which were vulnerable during the lockdown.

Everyone, he said, needed to make sacrifices for two weeks.

“We won’t be able to flatten the curve if various sectors are allowed to operate selectively.” - FMT
