PETALING JAYA: The government’s refusal to decide on Pejuang’s registration is “puzzling” as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s summoning of its pro tem chairman, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, shows the ruler recognises him as a leader of a political party, says a Pejuang leader.
Pejuang pro tem secretary-general Amiruddin Hamzah thanked the King for granting an audience to Mahathir on Thursday.
Mahathir, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, was among the political party leaders on both sides of the divide summoned by the King to discuss the Covid-19 situation.
Amiruddin said the Perikatan Nasional government’s refusal to approve Pejuang’s registration was politically motivated and showed a lack of respect for the Federal Constitution.
“We urge the home minister to approve Pejuang’s registration without delay,” he said in a statement.
In March, Pejuang went to court to compel home minister Hamzah Zainudin and the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to make a decision on the party’s registration appeal.
The minister and RoS were named as respondents to the action.
Pejuang was first set up in August last year as an independent Malay-based party after a faction linked with Mahathir split from Bersatu, which was also founded by the former prime minister. - FMT
