Umno set to postpone party elections for 18 months

Umno is set to postpone party elections for 18 months, according to a supreme council source.

A supreme council member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a consensus was arrived at through a resolution made online.

This is as the supreme council has not been able to meet during the total lockdown.

"The supreme council made a decision in the form of a circular resolution. This was done before.

"We did this because the Umno supreme council can't meet," the source told Malaysiakini.

Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who is also on the supreme council, confirmed this when contacted.

"The Umno election is expected to be held in early 2023," he said.

Separately, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan also confirmed with Free Malaysia Today that the elections will be postponed for 18 months.

Mohamad added that the party was told by the Health Ministry and National Security Council that it could do elections online, but said it was "impossible" to do so.

The term of the current party leadership is supposed to end this month, but the Umno constitution does allow for internal polls to be postponed for 18 months.

The postponement, if confirmed, will be a blow to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's detractors.

Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz and Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin have been pushing for the party to hold elections this year.

Nazri claimed to have secured signatures from 25 out of 42 BN lawmakers who want Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein to be their spokesperson.

He said this is as they do not trust Zahid to stand by the party's decision not to align with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, an attempt by Zahid to issue a 14-day ultimatum for the government to reconvene Parliament was doused with cold water by Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who said only the supreme council can decide on the party's stance. - Mkini
