UN General Assembly invites C4 to present statement on June 4

The United Nations General Assembly has selected Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) executive director Cynthia Gabriel to present a three-minute statement to UN member states on June 4 in New York.

Gabriel (above) said the gesture from the UN General Assembly "is an amazing development", adding that only five groups worldwide were selected by UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir to make an address.

"It's an incredible honour for me, for C4 and Malaysia," she told Malaysiakini.

The actual speech will be read on June 3, via a video presentation.

C4 appears to be the only national-level group to present its statement on the world stage, invited directly by the UN General Assembly.

"It is so important for the international community to come together to tackle transnational cross border corruption, like the (one involving) 1MDB," she added.

The UN General Assembly will host the Special Session of the General Assembly on Challenges and Measures to Prevent and Combat Corruption and Strengthen International Cooperation programme from June 2 to 4 at the UN headquarters in New York.

This is pursuant to the General Assembly resolutions 73/191 and 74/276, as well as decisions 74/568 and 75/562 entitled “Special session of the General Assembly against corruption”.

Malaysia has been in the international spotlight since the sovereign wealth fund 1MDB money-laundering scandal, which involved seven countries.

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who was 1MDB chairperson, has since been convicted for seven criminal charges related to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Najib is appealing his case, where he faces a 12-year jail term and a RM210 million fine for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

There are four other individuals from international groups selected to address the UN General Assembly including Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption chairperson Ahmad Bin Abdulla Bin Zaid AL Mahmoud, Fundación para la Democracia Internacional general director Marina Sala, Siemens AG general counsel and head of Siemens legal and compliance Andreas Hoffmann, and Basel Institute on Governance managing director Gretta Fenner.  - Mkini
