PETALING JAYA: Political parties should not even be thinking about the next general election (GE15) as long as the country is still struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic, said Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz.
His comments come after Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman asked his party not to push the Muhyiddin Yassin-led government to call for GE15.
“You shouldn’t be thinking about whether you want elections or not, as long as we don’t solve this problem (of flattening the infection curve). We have to focus on Covid-19. We cannot be selfish,” the Umno man told FMT.
Nazri said the most important thing for parties now was to focus on the health of the people, as daily infections still remain high.
“The Covid-19 numbers have not subsided for a long time, the current figures are very scary.
“The people should be the priority and they need to be vaccinated as soon as possible. We must focus on that first,” he said.
Nazri said he agreed with anyone who puts the interests of the people’s health first, regardless of their political alignment.
At the Umno general assembly in March, the party had demanded that GE15 be held after the emergency period ends, either on Aug 1 or earlier if the emergency is lifted. - FMT
