Army general: Lack of coordination, speed are why Covid-19 wave can't be beaten

An army general said the lack of integrated action and coordinated instructions contributed to why the country is unable to beat the current Covid-19 wave.

Brigadier General Dr Mohd Arshil Moideen (above), the management chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces Health Service Division, in an interview with Astro Awani, also cited lateness in the control, diagnosis and isolation of Covid-19 cases.

"What I see is a lack of top-down unified action and coordination.

"I'm commenting from a professional perspective where it can be observed that what was decided at the federal level is implemented differently at the state level.

"Likewise, at the state level, the implementation is different in each district. This is what we can see when there is no unified action or coordination," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.

"In a war, like the war on Covid-19, we need a single standardised strategy line of command that everyone can abide by," he added.

Arshil said the problem is also compounded by a lack of speed.

"In the army, we call it a speed of action (with) military precision.

"This is something I know is hard to achieve due to either a lack of resources or constraints faced by the Health Ministry and other agencies which have been working hard - but this is the reality, " he said.

He said the containment, diagnoses and isolation of Covid-19 cases took time and were not fast enough in places where the spread of the virus was rapid.

New cases hit a record high of 9,180 yesterday, with more than 4,000 in Selangor.

Dr Jemilah Mahmood, the special public health adviser to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, lauded Arshil's comments.

"Spot on and well said sir," she said on Twitter.

After Jemilah shared the Astro Awani interview, netizens queried if Muhyiddin was not listening to her advice. Jemilah's comment was later deleted. - Mkini
