The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has been instructed to open an investigation into a statement issued by Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang in rebutting claims by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin, whose Bersatu party is a coalition ally of Hadi, said Lim’s statement could be seen as seditious and an attempt to disrupt the harmony of Malaysia’s multi-cultural society.
Lim was responding to Hadi’s assertion that the Covid-19 pandemic is a test from God and only Allah’s government can overcome the battle against the disease.
“If this is the case, then we will expect the non-Islamic nations to be the purgatories on earth but how is it possible to explain why Malaysia came out (near the bottom) in countries in the Economist’s global normalcy index losing out to Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan - none of which claim to be Allah’s government!” asked Lim.
Hamzah said that the most important thing for Malaysians is to see this country in peace and prosperity.
“I think there are many that try to incite and divide the people in the country. Of course we will take firm action
“PDRM will investigate and take action not only against Lim but others who spread news that can divide the people.
“I ask everyone not to try to make this issue so inciting that it causes uneasiness in many places and which may cause anger throughout the country at the instigation of some parties,” Hamzah said at the Op Bantu press conference in KL today.
