PETALING JAYA: Umno will become weak and will lose the public’s trust if the wants of the grassroots are not respected, Zaid Ibrahim warned as talk of the party “pulling the plug” on its support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin continues to persist.
The former Umno leader and de facto law minister said the party must respect the decision of its Supreme Council.
Zaid observed that it has become a norm for Umno members to defy the party.
“There is this ‘disease’ in Umno where many of its MPs want to remain in government although the grassroots want out of Perikatan Nasional,” he said in a Facebook post.
“If the party cannot control its members and its leaders cannot reach a decision that is accepted by the majority, it will be unstable.”
Yesterday, several Umno leaders met at the party headquarters at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre to discuss leaving the PN-led government.
A smaller group of leaders later met at Menara Perwira near the defence ministry.
It is understood that the discussions at these meetings revolved around the plan to withdraw support for Muhyiddin.
On July 2, a party source said Umno – the biggest bloc in the government – was expected to retract support for the PN-led government with the majority of Supreme Council members stating their agreement with the move after meetings with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. - FMT
