DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said Umno's decision to withdraw from the Perikatan Nasional-led government last night was unfortunate as the focus should be on the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite the new political scenario, the Iskandar Puteri MP noted that no one appeared to be able to command a clear majority.
"This is most unfortunate for all energies should be focused on how to build a national coalition to win the war against the Covid-19 pandemic instead of waging political warfare.
"We are in a new political scenario where no one seems to be able to command a clear majority of support of MPs and this calls for an agile and creative solution based on a national coalition to win the war against Covid-19 pandemic," he said in a statement.
As such, he offered three options to move forward which included a choice of maintaining the current government or changing to a new one.
He said regardless of whether the current government is maintained or whether a new government is installed, both must agree to a consensus to form a national coalition encompassing the executive, Parliament, and various sectors of the Malaysian society for the Covid-19 fight.
Alternatively, he said a new government could be formed with representatives from all parties represented in Parliament with the overriding objective of forming a national coalition to win the war against Covid-19.
"This is the time for Malaysians, guided by the Malaysian constitution and the five Rukun Negara principles of nation-building, to put on their thinking caps and come up with ideas as to how Malaysians can win the war against Covid-19 pandemic before more damage is done to the Malaysian economy and society apart from more deaths and suicides as a result of the pandemic," he said.
