Umno's BN partners won't be taking the plunge with the Malay party which last night announced it was withdrawing support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government.
Instead, they plan to continue backing the Perikatan Nasional government until the next general election.
MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon said Umno's withdrawal has not changed his party's position.
"Unless BN makes a new, official decision, MCA will continue to support PN until the next election, in line with BN's decision before this," he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
The report also quoted MIC president S Vigneswaran playing down Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's (above) call for Muhyiddin to resign.
"When they were in power, the opposition demanded their prime minister to resign many times, but they did nothing because they knew it was just a demand,” he was quoted as saying.
Vigneswaran also questioned whether Zahid would be able to get leaders from his own government to resign from the government.
Zahid yesterday managed to get the Umno supreme council, which he has majority control, to back his move to withdraw from the PN government.
However, he does not have majority control of Umno's 38 MPs, most of whom are aligned with Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob and ex-Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.
Muhyiddin yesterday appointed Ismail as deputy prime minister and Hishammuddin as a senior minister to try and stave off Umno's exit.
Ismail and Hishammuddin had been rallying Umno MPs to block Zahid.
However, with Muhyiddin's four-seat majority, Zahid could still topple his government if only a handful of the 38 MPs side with him.
Following Zahid's announcement, most of the MPs have not yet made public on whether they will comply with the party's decision or remain with PN.
