PETALING JAYA: Being an “institution”, Umno need not support Bersatu to form the current Perikatan Nasional government, party stalwart Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said.
The Gua Musang MP, better known as Ku Li, said he had previously advised Umno against joining hands with the splinter party for that very purpose, only for it to fall on deaf ears.
Tengku Razaleigh said as a dominant party, Umno had strong grassroots support and did not have to stoop to such levels.
“Should we degrade ourselves, people won’t respect us,” he said in an interview this evening.
He went on to reiterate his call for Umno to quit the PN-led government and for its MPs in ministerial posts to step down.
“We need to divorce (from PN). That is what the Umno grassroots want and that was what was decided at the annual general assembly in March.”
On another matter, Tengku Razaleigh said Umno lost in the last general election due to schisms within the party.
He admitted that the 1MDB scandal, among others, may have played a part in the party losing seats and leading to Barisan Nasional (BN) losing power in the 14th general election (GE14).
However, he believes there was more to the loss than the issue of corruption.
“Yes, it’s true that people despise corruption, but it was the rifts in the party that led to the losses,” he said, citing Johor, Perak and Negeri Sembilan – strongholds in the past – as examples. - FMT
