Covid-19 (Oct 18): 5,434 cases, lowest since June 28

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 5,434 new Covid-19 cases today.

The new case count is the lowest in 112 days, since June 28.

The fresh infections today comprised 5,051 Malaysians (93 percent) and 383 non-citizens (7 percent).

They were surpassed by a total of 8,435 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

  • Patients in ICU: 682
  • Intubated: 357

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 9.8 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 10.1 percent from a week ago.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Oct 17), where 6,145 new cases were reported, is as follows:

Selangor (1,036)
Johor (732)
Sarawak (730)
Kelantan (572)
Sabah (504)
Perak (461)
Penang (438)
Kedah (370)
Terengganu (319)
Pahang (305)
Negeri Sembilan (214)
Malacca (206)
Kuala Lumpur (182)
Perlis (51)
Putrajaya (22)
Labuan (3)

As of yesterday, the R-naught for Malaysia was 0.88. An R-naught of less than 1.00 is desirable because it suggests the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

The only regions where the R-naught is above 1.00 are Negeri Sembilan and Putrajaya.

Clusters

To date, 656 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 15 new clusters reported today.

The ongoing clusters have fallen by 17.4 percent from the 794 active clusters a week ago.

The 15 new clusters today comprised nine workplace clusters (60.0 percent), two community clusters (13.3 percent), two education institution clusters (13.3 percent), one religious event cluster (6.7 percent) and one high-risk group cluster (6.7 percent).
