Malacca Harapan will try to block state election

Malacca Pakatan Harapan will attempt to block the upcoming state legislative assembly election through the courts.

In a statement today, Malacca Harapan chief Adly Zahari said the coalition will file a suit to seek a review on the process, procedure and facts surrounding the dissolution of the state assembly.

He said Malacca Harapan will also use legal means to "provide a chance" for a government with a legitimate majority to be formed in order to prevent an election.

He explained that the reason for the delay in filing the suit was that the notice of dissolution of the state assembly was handed to assemblypersons only today.

Government gazette

Adly (above) claimed that the notice was dated Oct 15. According to the government gazette dated Oct 5, the dissolution was carried out on Oct 4.

"However, Malacca Harapan will still prepare for an election," he said.

Outgoing chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali advised Governor Mohd Ali Rustam to dissolve the state assembly after losing support from four assemblypersons.

There are fears that holding an election in Malacca might worsen the Covid-19 situation in the state.

According to Health Ministry data, the entire adult population in Malacca has been vaccinated, although this is likely an undercount since the population data was derived from the 2010 census.

Malacca's intensive care bed use by Covid-19 patients is currently 36.8 percent, far lower than Sarawak (76.8 percent) - the state where an election has been overdue since June.

Today, the Election Commission has fixed Nov 20 for the Malacca state election. - Mkini
