PARLIAMENT | Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Special Functions Abdul Latiff Ahmad said he will be tabling a cabinet memorandum next week on a law specifically dealing with cybersecurity in the country.
He said this to Wong Shu Qi (Pakatan Harapan-Kluang), who had previously expressed concern over an alleged attempt to sell 31.8GB worth of personal data originating from the National Registration Department (NRD) and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) on a hacker forum.
“Even though we already have a Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Police Act 1967, the government is of the opinion that there needs to be a specific law for cybersecurity.
“This is being discussed and I will table a cabinet memorandum next week to ensure all the data in the possession of the government and the private sector will continue to be preserved,” Latiff said.
He was giving his winding-up speech for the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The attempt to the personal details of millions of individuals allegedly stolen from the NRD was first reported at the end of September.
The dataset was advertised on an online forum notorious for selling stolen personal information from all over the world.
The police had said they are trying to block the sale of the data and identify those involved in the leak.
The NRD and the IRB have both distanced themselves from the leak. - Mkini
