Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun should accept opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's appeal for his motion on the Pandora Papers to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat, said PKR treasurer Lee Chean Chung.
Lee (above) said Azhar should not be more aggressive in defending the government than the government itself.
"I call for Azhar to expedite the opposition leader's appeal for the Pandora Papers to be debated in the interest of the people and country.
"Stop defending the indefensible and restore the dignity of the Dewan Rakyat," he said in a statement.
The Pandora Papers refer to leaked documents from financial service firms that assist the super-wealthy in keeping funds abroad.
Among those who have been named include former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
They have all maintained that the offshore entities they were involved in were above board.
Having offshore entities is not illegal but they can also be used for tax avoidance.
Lee said politicians should be transparent about their assets.
The Semambu assemblyperson also noted that the release of the Pandora Papers coincided with the European Union (EU) putting Malaysia in the "grey list" as among the jurisdictions that have been uncooperative on tax declarations.
The EU list is a tool to address legal means of tax avoidance, or illegal means like tax fraud and money laundering, and concealment of origins of illegally obtained money.
PKR president Anwar had sought to debate the Pandora Papers in the Dewan Rakyat but was rejected by Azhar.
