Anwar's ex-aide to challenge Selangor MB in PKR polls

Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak has confirmed that he would be contesting for a division chief position in Gombak, challenging Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, in the party's polls this April.

Describing his move as being a part of the democratic process, Farhash (above, right) said the contest would also be in line with the party's rules and provisions.

"My offer to contest in the Gombak division is not to challenge the MB. This is the party election, a democratic process.

"So we won't know if it would be a multi-cornered fight. Sometimes two, three, four or five corners. But I can confirm that I offered myself to contest," Farhash told Malaysiakini when contacted.

The former political secretary to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim also denied perceptions that his decision to contest would fan the flames of infighting.

"No. This is not a fight. This is an election. The division is not any single individual's right, even though they are the MB.

"We (party) make an offer to the members and they will decide. We are not out to fight, battle, throw chairs… no," he said.

"This is a party election, just like any other election. That's it. All positions will be contested, not just at the divisions, but all," he said.

For the record, Amirudin was previously seen as a staunch supporter of former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, who led a departure of PKR MPs to join Bersatu and trigger the downfall of the Pakatan Harapan government through the Sheraton Move in February 2020.

In denying any intentions to trigger another split within PKR, Farhash said his move is part and parcel of politics.

"I myself was originally from a Selangor division for more than 10 years, I was 'borrowed' to Perak for one year and now I'm coming back to Selangor," he said.

Meanwhile, Farhash also confirmed his resignation as Anwar's political secretary last December to focus on the party election and the next general election.

"I can no longer give my full-time commitment (as political secretary). So I asked for permission to resign," he said.

PKR will hold its election of office bearers for the 2022-2025 session from April 22 to 29 while the national congress will be held from June 10 to 12.

The nomination period will be open from March 11 to 19. - Mkini
