JOHOR POLLS | DAP has accused Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin of practising "double standards" after the latter's handling of a Covid-19 protocol breach involving a cabinet minister.
In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said BN and Perikatan Nasional appeared to be allowed to hold big events undisturbed while the opposite is true for the opposition.
In view of the upcoming Johor legislative assembly elections, Lim said it was clear that the playing field was not level in terms of Covid-19 protocol enforcement.
Moreover, Lim pointed out that Khairy only announced fines for cabinet minister Hishammuddin Hussein, incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad and MIC president S Vikneswaran.
"Will the organiser, as well as each and every participant in the MIC gathering, be fined?" asked Lim.
The event in Kota Iskandar, Johor, occurred yesterday, and Khairy swiftly announced the fines after videos depicting the three BN leaders in a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd surfaced.
This event was meant to kick off Johor MIC's election campaign. Hishammuddin and Hasni were guests. Vigneswaran is also the Dewan Negara president.
However, since Hishammuddin is part of a four-member "senior cabinet minister" who decides on Covid-19 protocols, there have been calls for his resignation.
Similarly, Lim accused Hishammuddin of "open contempt" for Covid-19 protocols and breach of cabinet discipline.
"When lawmakers deliberately and knowingly become lawbreakers, the ministers and menteri besar are not fit to govern," he said.
The RM1,000 fine meted on the trio, said Lim, was "cosmetic" in nature as they could well afford it, and hence only resignation from public office would suffice. - Mkini
